NITB is responsible for the development of tourism and the marketing of Northern Ireland as a tourist destination to visitors within Northern Ireland and from the Republic of Ireland.
Enterprise, Trade and Investment Minister Arlene Foster has set out the way ahead for the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) and broader tourism structures following the Hunter Review.
In an Assembly statement, the Minister said implementation of the review’s recommendations would make NITB even stronger with a new name, new leadership, new partnerships and a new future strategy.
Commenting on today’s announcement NITB Chairman Howard Hastings, OBE, said;
“The Northern Ireland Tourist Board believes the review has been an excellent opportunity to help set the course for a sustainable, high performing tourism industry. This is what is urgently required by our economy in the years ahead”.
“We are pleased that today’s statement recognises the impressive progress made by tourism, and the important role played by NITB in growing visitor numbers and revenue, and recommends that NITB should be further strengthened and lead the way on implementing the review”.
Enterprise, Trade and Investment Minister Arlene Foster has secured funding for Northern Ireland Tourist Board’s Tourism Events Funding Programme in 2015/2016.
A new Green Tourism Initiative is launching in January 2015. The initiative – which is free for participating businesses – is managed by BTS in partnership with Green Tourism, on behalf of Ards, Banbridge, Down and Newry and Mourne Councils.
The objective of the initiative is to develop the Mourne Mountains & Ring of Gullion and Strangford Lough region as a ‘green’ visitor destination, to attract the growing number of visitors who rate sustainable destinations as high on their list of holiday preferences.
