Saint Patrick's Signature Project - Overview
The Saint Patrick’s/Christian Heritage project was identified as one of the 5 Signature Projects in NITB’s Strategic Framework for Action 2004-2007.
The project itself is primarily based on the urban centres of Armagh and Downpatrick, with Bangor and Newry as secondary clusters, although the project does have an affinity and resonance with all of Northern Ireland and indeed, the island of Ireland.
A 3 year Action Plan was launched in March 2005 developed around six priority themes, namely:-
• Working in partnership
• Developing a Saint Patrick’s Trail
• Creating a memorable Experience
• A co-ordinated events and festival programme
• Strong marketing and branding, and
• Developing cross border activities
The plan which is 80% complete is currently being reviewed with local stakeholders and a revised updated plan will be produced for the next three years.
The project has also been awarded a capital allocation of £5 million through the Comprehensive Spending Review. Through NITB’s Tourism Development Scheme (PfG) £3.5 of this money will be administered to develop projects which NITB believe will enhance the St Patrick/Christian Heritage Signature Project area.
