Development Plan for Downpatrick’s Cultural Quarter: Final Report

Down District Council, within its Down 2010 plan identified the need to develop a Cultural Quarter in Downpatrick and this was reflected in plans submitted to the Building Sustainable Prosperity Programme, through the Local Development Action Plan. To progress the project BSP monies were allocated to the production of a Downpatrick Development Plan. The resulting Downpatrick Development Plan recommended a town centre approach to making the most of Downpatrick’s cultural and heritage assets.

The Council identified that further examination of the area around the town’s original streets, with the Down Arts Centre at the central point was required; Haley Sharpe was appointed by Down District Council to undertake a project to prepare a Development Plan for Downpatrick’s Cultural Quarter. It is proposed that this development plan for the Cultural Quarter will form the basis of future funding bids.

The development plan for Downpatrick’s Cultural Quarter will also provide an important contribution and input into the wider Public Realm Strategy for Downpatrick which the Council is to undertake in the near future.
