Titanic Signature Building

Introduction

The Titanic Signature Building (TSB) will be iconic in design and will house a world class visitor attraction. It will be located at Titanic Quarter (East Belfast). The exhibition will be based on the theme of the Titanic and the wider subject of Belfast’s shipbuilding and maritime heritage. Of such scale, the building will become Northern Ireland’s largest and most successful built attraction.

Titanic Foundation Limited and TSB Funders

The Titanic Signature Building will be wholly owned and operated by Titanic Foundation Limited (TFL). The TSB has been funded in partnership by Belfast City Council (BCC), Belfast Harbour Commissioners (BHC), Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) and Titanic Quarter Limited (TQL).

Further information on TFL and all the funders can be found at Who’s Who

Titanic Signature Building

The most important component of the Titanic Quarter site will be the signature building located at the head of the slipways, where the Titanic was built.. The overall design of the building has been influenced by the shipbuilding heritage of Belfast. The building in its line and form incorporates elements of the Titanic bow, the White Star Line insignia and the gantries used to build the Titanic. Up to 600 people will be employed at the peak of the construction phase which represents a major boost to Northern Ireland’s construction sector. The TSB will open in 2012 to mark the centenary of Titanic’s maiden voyage.

Titanic Signature Building objectives

• Be a centre piece for both Titanic Quarter and the Titanic Signature Project and will act as a catalyst for the development of existing Titanic assets;

• Provide a new must see attraction for Northern Ireland that represents a major asset for the tourism sector;

• Provide a cultural icon for the City of Belfast;

• Tell the story of Belfast, its people and wider history as well as the story of the Titanic itself;

• Present an exhibition that combines a series of interpretative techniques combining a high level of interactive content with some original material/artefacts and deliver a high quality visitor experience;

• Present an exhibition that is robust and well researched.

Visitor Experience

The building will be capable of handling around 900,000 visitors per annum, including up to 400,000 visitors to its exhibition. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the construction of the Titanic, her maiden voyage and the disaster. They will also experience the wide and rich story of the city of Belfast, Northern Ireland’s industrial and maritime heritage and the people whose personalities, industry and skills contributed to that heritage. Funding

At its meeting on 1 October 2009, the Executive agreed to proceed with its commitment to part fund the Titanic Signature Project, to the sum of up to £36.95million. Titanic Quarter Limited, the private sector partner in the project, as a signal of its commitment, had, at its own risk, and pending final Executive approval, authorised work to begin on site some time ago. This has ensured that the building remains on course for completion by April 2012. The remaining £39.95 million required for the project, will come from Titanic Quarter Limited, Belfast Harbour Commissioners and Belfast City Council.
