Food and Our Visitors

If your business depends on selling, producing or serving food – the opportunities with tourism are vital to consider. Our food industry have significant opportunities to contribute to a fantastic visitor experience and subsequently grow their revenue from tourism   Food is as vital a part of the tourism experience as accommodation, culture and scenery for visitors coming to experience the real Northern Ireland.

Leveraging our unique, interesting and high quality local produce based food culture is a route to growing earnings for Northern Ireland.  In 2011 GB and overseas visitors to Northern Ireland spent approximately £132 on food and drink.

We are also gaining recognition for the standard of our produce internationally;

Lough Neagh Eels, Armagh Bramley Apples and Comber Potatoes have all been awarded EU Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Status which means that produce is recognised internationally for its quality and uniqueness to a region in the way that Parma Ham or Champagne is.

Grow your food tourism potential

The Northern Ireland Tourist Board in partnership with Food NI built upon the interest generated at the Balmoral show by embarking on a programme of ‘Food Insight’ sessions aimed at engaging with small tourism facing businesses with a food offer.

The ‘Food Insights’ took place at regional agricultural shows across Northern Ireland during June and July 2012. Delegates were able to get advice on how, why and where to get the best local produce to use in their establishments as well as enjoy a cookery demo and tasting with a locally renowned chef.

To accompany the Food Insight sessions NITB also developed ‘Our Food So Good – Growing Your Food Tourism Potential’ booklet .  This trade guideline booklet has been well received by the food trade and provides 10 top things for businesses to think about if they wish to provide a great food experience for visitors.
